Town of Westerly, Washington co, Rhode Island Probate Files

Mis-spelled! Poor Index quality control at Ancestry.com!

Fredirck - Frederick
Sylvan Hagans - Sylvia Hazard
Peleg H. Noyes - Peleg N. Noyes
Peleg A. Noyes - Peleg N. Noyes (they thought it was two different persons!)
Hye - Nye
Lanphear - despite clear and identicla writing in batches in different drawers - incompetent indexer still managed to have different spellings for them. (The original writer of index cards are on every one in Drawer 1 through Drawer 4).

Not only that, the indexer omitted most of cases if there's more than ONE minor or if there's more than one person involved in adoption.

That is just a few (at the rate of 1 of 5 is mis-spelled or completely wrong)

Now which site is more reliable?

Hamilton County, New York Probate Files and a problem

Hamilton County New York probate files is not really 100 percent.

Why? Somehow in 1968 the microfilm operator never got around to finish the rest of the set, went up to 175, instead of 1468

Supposed to be "Estate papers, nos. 1-1468; 1861-1900s"

Anyway, here is the completed portion to the full extent, that is.

Tried to contact Acquisitions/Book Donations/Cataloging Department and it was mad! No one in FamilySearch volunteer group knows it exists. I had to use different phone call route and got to the department to get necessary email information to send them the problem information.

Ancestry's Rhode Island Probate Records SCREW UP

Ancestry failed in two areas real miserably.

Every body who had probate file filed in Providence County, listed has having died in ARIZONA. See for yourself. And I checked on other counties where my lines were in. SAME STORY.

Ancestry goofed on another part - all records listed by county instead of the TOWN level. You have to see the fine print of breadcrumb at the very bottom below the index information

Original data: Rhode Island, District and Probate Courts.

(Completely wrong!, the records are filed at TOWN level. There is NO District level.)

I know because I've been through those records before Ancestry ever put them online.

Even with that, Ancestry still managed to make it difficult to navigate to find correct probate records. I counted at least 3 levels to get to the point where you have to check each entry to find correct person.

Rhode Island probate files - Pawtucket and Westerly

probate files - Rhode Island - no original indexes. Images not online. Page by page to find the index cards.

Town of Pawtucket and Town of Westerly at the moment.

Pawtucket has testate, inestate and guardianship records.

Westerly has adoption and guardianship records as well as testate and inestate records.
